Is streaming better for the environment?
What is the carbon impact of the energy needed for hosting digital music – and how does that compare to production and distribution impact of CDs (and tapes before them), especially all those which are never bought (X Factor winners anyone?). Similarly for films – renting from Netflix has to be better than driving to your local blockbuster (RIP) to pick up a DVD/video…
Similarly for for TV shows, whilst there may not be much of carbon difference between streaming and broadcasting, not having millions of viewers putting the kettle on during Corrie ad breaks, or at the end of Strictly must be a boon for the grid. As more people begin to consume content at their own time, this will surely help.
I’m sure there are people out there with the data to look at this properly!
